We do not recommend (or receive financial support from) any product. Phosphatidyl-choline is the natural form found in food. Choline is what the baby needs for its brain development. Your body and the baby can easily convert one to the other as needed. Three basic types to choose from:
(1) Combinations of choline bitartrate with prenatal vitamins; advantages are convenience and optional dietary and genetic counseling, disadvantages are the lower, fixed dose of choline bitartrate and cost.
(2) Phosphatidylcholine--advantages are excellent absorption and fewer gastrointestinal side effects, disadvantages are many capsules each day, along with a prenatal vitamin, and cost; (3) Choline bitartrate or citrate--advantages are smaller tablets and lowest cost, disadvantages are tablets must be taken, along with a prenatal vitamin, with fluid and food three times per day because of rapid excretion and possible gastrointestinal side effects.
