CHOLINE and YOUR BABY's BIRTHWEIGHT
Choline and low birthweights in newborn girls
Poor fetal growth in the third trimester is a frequent reason for our recommendation of choline supplements in pregnancy. Many of the effects of choline supplements are delayed, perhaps for decades in the case of prevention of mental illness. Positive effects of choline supplements on fetal growth are seem in several weeks. Not only is the frequency of small for gestational age babies decreased, but there is also an overall positive effect on birthweight for all babies.
One mother wrote: “As a 39-year-old mother of two young children with an active professional career, I knew that another child was a reach. I was happy that I was pregnant again, and even happier that I was having twins. I wondered how my body could provide my two unborn babies with everything they needed to grow, with two little children and the demands of my career. I am blessed to have a very supportive husband. Dr. Robert Freedman at CU School of Medicine advised me to take a choline supplement with my prenatal vitamins. I checked with my own obstetrician, who agreed that it would not hurt. As my pregnancy progressed, my doctor was amazed at how well the twins inside me were growing. Twin babies are smaller than other babies, and being an older mother does not help either. My delivery went well, and the twins at birth were already alert. At 5½ years of age, they are bright, healthy, and happy children, a joyous addition to our family.”
